City Councilmembers call on mayor to add 1,000 cops following 7% spike in shootings

JENNIFER FERMINO

Saying there's been a spike in violence across the city, members of the City Council's Black, Latino and Asian Caucus called on Mayor de Blasio to boost the number of cops on the street and increase funding for community groups in crime plagued neighborhoods.

City Councilman Andy King (D-Bronx) said that the 47 precinct in his district has seen a staggering 80% jump in homicides this year compared to the same time period last year, when there was just one murder. This year there has been eight murders - including five this month.

"We've had more shootings in the last two weeks and killings than I've had all of last year," said King. "That's a major, major problem, and a major concern."

He called on the mayor to add 1,000 new police to the NYPD.
