Crash victims' families rally for 25 mile per hour speed limit
ERIN DURKIN
Families of New Yorkers killed in car crashes demanded Tuesday that the city speed limits be cut to 25 miles per hour.
The relatives joined advocates at City Hall to push Albany to act on a bill to lower the default speed limit on city streets from the current 30 mph to 25 before the end of the legislative session this month.
The bill has support in the Assembly, but has gone nowhere in the state Senate, where it currently lacks a sponsor.
People often applaud the courage that we demonstrate in coming up and speaking out, said Aaron Charlop-Powers, whose mother was killed while riding her bicycle in the Bronx. We cant be the only ones demonstrating courage. So we are here to demand to the New York state Senate that they demonstrate courage and they demonstrate leadership and pass a bill that will save lives as soon as its passed.
