Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver invested in Halliburton; De Blasio helps raise half a million for Democrats

KENNETH LOVETT

ALBANY — Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver has a stock portfolio worth up to $2.5 million — including a small investment in a company that is virtually synonymous with Republican fund-raising and policymaking.

State records show that Silver, the powerful Manhattan Democrat, invested last year in Halliburton, the energy company that not only has ties to former Vice President Dick Cheney but was accused of profiteering off the Iraq War. The company is also involved in the controversial gas drilling practice known as hydrofracking that many New York Dems oppose.

Silver’s investment in the company is worth between $5,000 and $20,000, financial disclosure forms show.

“Dick Cheney ran Halliburton,” said one astounded Dem. “What’s he (Silver) doing there?”
