Casella reaches agreement with N.Y. over waste-hauling contracts

Casella Waste Systems has agreed to change its contracts with commercial customers under a settlement to end a state investigation into anti-competitive practices, New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced Monday.
Under the settlement, Casella agreed to not enroll customers in contracts for more than two years and to reduce its charge for ending a contract early. The early-termination charge will equal three months service in the first year of a contract and one month after the first year.
The attorney generals office found that Casella has required early-termination fees equal to six times a monthly bill and contracted for exclusive waste hauling services for as long as five years.
Casella also will notify the attorney generals office if it acquires a competitor in of a certain minimum size in certain counties, including Tompkins, Schuyler, Chemung and Schuyler. The company will also pay $100,000.
