So DINO State Sen has 2 million $ from 167 donors and primary challenger has 123 k from 3800 donors.

No surprise there. It'll be interesting to see how this race turns out.

The incumbent , Jeff Klein, is BLATANTLY pay-for-play. ( Apparently it's legal here.) The challenger is actually better known but running w/o the blessing of the NYS party machine. (Even though the incumbent started the race vowing to keep the GOP in power in the state senate. No, it doesn't make sense, but this is the NYS DEM party we're talking about)

It's a gerrymandered Bronx district.

Anyway, challenger Oliver Koppell speaketh today, via email:

>>>Thanks to those of you who were able to contribute to our NY State Senate campaign, our first financial filing to the NYS Board of Elections shows contributions over $123,000. I am particularly proud that over 3,800 individuals contributed to the campaign.

Due to careful spending, we have over $100,000 in the bank. This will enable us to begin to get our message out to the Democratic voters in the district. However, we are doing everything we Thanks to those of you who were able to contribute to our NY State Senate campaign, our first financial filing to the NYS Board of Elections shows contributions over $123,000. I am particularly proud that over 3,800 individuals contributed to the campaign.

Due to careful spending, we have over $100,000 in the bank. This will enable us to begin to get our message out to the Democratic voters in the district. However, we are doing everything we can to raise another $100,000 before the Primary.

In contrast to our grassroots campaign, Senator Klein has relied on wealthy donors and special interests to raise his enormous war chest. His report showed only 167 individual donors, with only 30 donors contributing less than $250 each - and virtually all individual donations between $500 and $10,000. The bulk of Senator Klein's funding came from corporate contributions totaling over $600,000 from a laundry list of special interest groups. Senator Klein is truly the King of "Pay to Play."

Regrettably, Senator Klein's partnership with Republicans, which enabled them to remain in the Majority (without earning a majority of votes), fueled the Republican State Senate Campaign Committee's ability to raise a war chest of $5 million.

We thank you for your generous contributions thus far and encourage you to spread the word to your friends, family, and neighbors about the need to win back the 34th NY Senate seat for a progressive Democratic agenda.

But the same mentality prevails here.

One party: The Money Party.

How the hell do we get rid of these people who don't rep us if people keep voting for those with big money backers. How long will it take for people to figure out those with the money are not on our team.

One of the intriguing things about this particular race is that essentially that's the ONLY issue. Whether we want corrupt political institutions or not.

Obviously most people don't care/don't understand. ( Which is really the same thing, imo.)

But the turnout in this September primary will be so tiny that pretty much the results will comprise a useful breakdown: of the people who DO understand what the problem is..... how many are PART of the problem vs. how many are part of the solution.

He certainly didn't run on a platform promising that, if elected as a Democrat, he would cut a deal to thwart the will of the people.

Hence, you can't be too harsh in blaming the people who voted for him in 2012. The test will be this year, now that he's shown his true colors.
