Signaling Push On WEA, Women’s Group Knocks Senate GOP Candidate
Nick Reisman
In yet another sign allies of Senate Democrats will be using the 10-point womens agenda this fall as a political bludgeon against Republican candidates, Planned Parenthood Advocates of New York are blasting GOP hopeful Rich Funke for comments made on the key abortion provision in the measure.
Speaking to Time Warner Cable News last week, Funke was asked whether he believed the measure aimed at the codification of Roe v. Wade was limited in scope or went beyond that.
Funke responded that he believes the abortion plank is more of an expansion than a simple codification.
I dont, because we have there are laws on the books in the state of New York. They are very liberal abortion laws in the state of New York. Theyre on the books theyre there. And there are protections for women within the framework of those laws. Codifying Roe v. Wade takes away all those restrictions, and all those protections, Funke said. :I dont think thats a good thing in terms of womens health. I dont think thats the way we should be going no other state in the union has done that and I just dont think its right for the state of New York either. I think women need to be protected. I think having an abortion up to the point of birth is not a particularly wise idea. And I think the notion that non-doctors could perform abortions is not a good idea either. So I think the laws that are on the books in the state of New York right now are adequate.
