Mayor de Blasio signs "Avonte's Law"

JENNIFER FERMINO

A somber Mayor de Blasio Thursday signed a bill into law that will require additional safety procedures in city schools that were crafted after the Avonte Oquendo tragedy.

Dubbed “Avonte’s law,” it requires officials to annually reevaluate security plans, and compile a list of schools that are in need of exit alarms to protect students.

"Every one of us felt the pain of his loss," said de Blasio before signing the bill.

1. Evidence indicates: bad ed policy killed Avonte; not "alarm-less" doors.

Severely autistic kids should :

1. not be co-located in gen ed school buildings.

2. not be doing a gen. ed ( "Common-Core-aligned&quot curriculum.

They don't need algebra; they need to know what to do if they are lost or in danger.

Obama, Duncan, Cuomo, Gates, NCLB, RTTE, the Bloomberg appointees at NYC DOE that di Blasio doesn't want to ( or is afraid to) replace.

Ignorance about the nature of handicapping conditions, sp ed, public ed in general on the part of the political class ( upper middle class prep school types.)

Here: this is what these geniuses think kids like Avonte should be doing in school:

7. Oh, heck yeah. All of this corporate ed "reform" is $$$-driven.

The Danielson Group Inc. alone has multiple contracts w. many ...esp...... large *urban* districts. The $$$ must be unfathomable.

There's reams of stuff online re the $$$ push behind Common Core and charter schools... to pick the two current hot-button pillars of corporate ed.

Money trickles down all over the place. Even the dialogue re. these things is corrupted by "grants" given to think tanks and others by Gates, and Walmart, et al, et al... to produce "evidence" suggesting support for Gates foundation policies and positions. These people then appear on talk shows and are interviewed by NPR and PBS as "experts". No disclaimers, natch.

One wonders about the unions... as well. Many of the officers appear to be weirdly ok w corporate "reform". Your earier OP re. Mr. Mulgrew was case in point. VERY few classroom teachers favor CCSS. BUT....the LEADERSHIP of the UFT and AFT are TOTALLY... and, as you can see from the Mulgrew OP , EMOTIONALLY in favor . To the point of threatening violence to people who want to "take it away". Could have something to do w. large ( $$$millions) subsidies fro Gates Foundation to AFT? ( It's on the Gate Foundation website. )

Very strange, curious, disturbing phenomena.
