Schumer, Gillibrand back Greece man's crusade

Patti Singer
Every time Jim Leary walks through the dining room of his Greece home, he passes the collage of photos he made for his wife's funeral.

Barbara Leary died in September 2013 of cancer, after undergoing a procedure as part of minimally invasive surgery to remove what were deemed to be benign fibroids.

The growths turned out to be cancerous, and the use of a power morcellator to cut the tissue so it could be removed through small incisions spread the cancer.

Over the past few months, Leary joined a number of families who lost loved ones to a form of cancer called leiomyosarcoma. What started as a grassroots effort received a boost Tuesday when U.S. Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand and Charles Schumer wrote a letter to the head of the Food and Drug Administration urging the agency to have all manufacturers of power morcellators recall the devices.
