A ‘forever grateful’ Joe Torre honored at Stadium as Yankees retire his No. 6

STEPHEN LORENZO

There will never be another No. 6 in pinstripes.

Joe Torre was immortalized in Yankees lore on Saturday, getting his number retired in addition to getting a plaque in Monument Park. He is the 18th Yankee to have his number retired and will be the 30th plaque in Monument Park.

“To have your number retired for any team is certainly special. But when you talk about the history and tradition of the New York Yankees, known worldwide, it’s a feeling I can’t describe,” Torre said. “There wouldn’t have been a Cooperstown without Yankee Stadium.”

Were those the bad years I keep hearing about until the late 70's?

I started rooting for the Yanks as a child in 1965. It was the end of the empire. Mickey Mantle was still there, mostly to get to 500 home runs and be overpaid a whopping $100K. They were almost always awful; free agency rules rescued them in the mid-70s. That and some fearsomely good trades by Gabe Paul.
