Mayor de Blasio defends plan to scrap test-only admissions for elite high schools

ERIN DURKIN

Mayor de Blasio defended his plan to scrap an admissions test as the sole criteria for entry into the city’s elite public high schools after alumni from the schools protested the changes.

Backers say the change is needed because the schools, including Stuyvesant, Bronx Science, and Brooklyn Tech, admit few black and Latino students and are instead overwhelmingly Asian and white.

“It’s just this simple. This is a society that’s supposed to be based on fairness. Our specialized schools don’t reflect the kind of fairness that any New Yorker would recognize by any common sense measure,” de Blasio said.
