NYC fire academy takes steps to curb MRSA outbreak

NEW YORK (AP) — The Fire Department of New York is taking steps to prevent infection after more than a dozen probationary firefighters were diagnosed with the drug-resistant staph infection known as MRSA.

Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro said in a memo Thursday that a specialized cleaning company will disinfect showers, locker rooms and other high-risk areas at the fire academy at Randall's Island over the Labor Day weekend and that trainees' gear will be laundered with a product that kills MRSA.

volley's thats come down from it at the academy. He said they gave them old filty gear. I guess its too much to ask that they launder it. Our local vol. dept has huge washers and dryers for that purpose.

knees were worn thin. There is a lot of crawling in training along with severe sweating. They put them on IV antibotics. They sell leather patch repair kits. Knee pads run around $15.00 dollars. Our guy and another both got it.
