Brooklyn’s new hate crimes unit already ‘busy’

Colby Hamilton

The Brooklyn district attorney's new hate crimes unit is only a few days old, but assistant D.A. Marc Fliedner said he's “unfortunately” already working on cases.

“I’ve actually been busy the few days that I’ve been on the job,” said Fliedner, who was tapped to lead the new unit by district attorney Ken Thompson.

The hate crimes unit will be staffed by five dedicated attorneys and will exist within the office's civil rights bureau. Fliedner said the high rate of hate crimes in the borough led Thompson to create the new unit.
