State fine for incinerator

Brian Nearing

Cohoes

The owner of the state's only commercial hazardous waste incinerator was hit with a nearly $30,000 state fine for several environmental violations, including a pungent chemical release last summer from their Route 32 plant.

As part of an agreement signed Tuesday with the state Department of Environmental Conservation, Norlite Corp. also agreed to pay $64,000 for environmental projects meant to benefit the Cohoes community that will be selected by DEC.

Cohoes Mayor George Primeau said he will meet Monday with Norlite officials to discuss the DEC agreement.

"I want to see what is going on, and hear it from them directly," he said.
