Re. Sheldon Silver: Maybe We'd Be Better Off if He Stays?

The gist: "Gov. Cuomo is tough and will take advantage of Assembly weakness. So will the Republican Senate."

Richard Brodsky in NY Daily News

>>>The hard and unsatisfying answer is to keep him.

The Legislature has just begun its fiercest and most important struggle, fixing the parts of the governor’s budget that need fixing.

This year there’s an enormous amount at stake: Standardized testing and teacher evaluation; the minimum wage; aid for cities; many major pieces of Mayor de Blasio’s agenda; use of a $5 billion one-time surplus from bank settlements; the Tappan Zee Bridge; and much more.

These affect the lives of all the people, not just the political class.

Gov. Cuomo is tough and will take advantage of Assembly weakness. So will the Republican Senate.

Silver, whatever else you can say, has been the world’s best negotiator over the course of decades.

If you care about the substance of education, security or economic fairness, he’s important.>>>>.
