IBM announces furloughs
ARMONK – IBM, headquartered in Armonk, said Tuesday that it will furlough most of its US-based STG employees for one week with one-third pay as a means of cutting costs. IBM has a large presence in Dutchess County and those employees would also be impacted by the furlough.
“A majority of System and Technology Group and Integrated Supply Chain employees who support STG – in the U.S. – including STG and ISC executives – will take a mandatory week off beginning either August 24 or August 31,” said Jay Cadmus, and STG spokesman. Executives will not be paid for that week.
Lee Conrad, national coordinator for Alliance@IBM, Communication Workers of America Local 1701 said the furlough will be rough on the employees.
“We have a lot of people in STG that are just barely making it anymore so a third of their pay, that’s a pay cut,” Conrad said. “It is when kids are going back to school, takes food off the table, money out of the house. This has more of an effect on those workers than the executives.”
