NYPD Tapes: City Subpeonas Frank Serpico Over Communications with Village Voice Reporter, Among Others

In a puzzling move, the city has sent a subpoena to legendary NYPD whistleblower Frank Serpico for information on his interactions with, among other people, this reporter.
The subpoena was sent as part of the city's defense of the lawsuit filed by Adrian Schoolcraft, who is suing the city over the infamous Oct. 31, 2009, incident in which police bosses ordered him dragged out of his apartment and placed in the Jamaica Hospital psych ward.
The revelation was first disclosed in Leonard Levitt's NYPD Confidential column on Monday. The reasoning behind it is unclear: it could be a suggestion that Serpico somehow influenced Schoolcraft which is doubtful, or it could be the city casting a wide net for as much information as possible.
Suzanna Publicker Mettham, the city attorney handling the Schoolcraft case, said this: "Based on reported comments by Mr. Serpico to media outlets, we have reason to believe that he may have information relevant to Adrian Schoolcraft's lawsuit. As he is not a party, a subpoena was recently served requesting any relevant documents in his possession."
