A poll released Wednesday shows former Gov. Eliot Spitzer with a commanding lead in the race to become the next New York City comptroller.
According to the latest Quinnipiac University poll, Spitzer has a whopping 19-point lead over his opponent, Manhattan Borough president Scott Stringer, leading 56 37 among likely Democratic voters. The previous poll's results suggested the race to be much closer, with Spitzer leading 49 to 45 percent over Stringer, widening the margin by 15 points.
Spitzer who was forced to resign from office in 2008 amid a prostitution scandal leads 58- 37 percent among men; 54 36 percent among women; and dominated among black voters with 68 percent compared to just 21 percent who are in favor of Stringer. The poll did reveal Stringer leads among white voters 53 43 percent.
"Everyone seems to be against former Gov. Eliot Spitzer except the voters, especially black voters," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "Spitzer is all over the TV screens, building on his better name recognition and leaving Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer in the dust."
