Judge Orders LICH Ownership To Be Taken From SUNY, But Continuum Says It Can't Take Control

A judge has ordered Brooklyn's Long Island College Hospital to be taken out of SUNY's hands, but the partnership that the judge ruled LICH should be transferred to has said they cannot take over management.

SUNY Downstate had been fighting in court to close the facility against stiff community opposition, but a judge ruled Tuesday that SUNY violated an agreement to preserve the hospital.

Instead, the judge has ruled that the hospital should be transferred to Continuum, the partnership that runs Beth Israel and St. Luke's Hospitals, among others.

The state Health Commissioner would have to approve the transfer.
