Planned Parenthood endorses Christine Quinn for mayor

By Anna Sanders

Citing her work providing New Yorkers with access to sexual and reproductive services, the Planned Parenthood of New York City Political Committee endorsed City Council Speaker Christine Quinn for mayor Tuesday.

“Chris has shown her commitment to protecting women’s access to life-saving cancer screenings, birth control and safe and legal abortion — and she wholeheartedly shares our belief that medical decisions are best made by women and doctors, not politicians,” Joan Malin, head of the political committee, said in a statement.

If elected, Quinn said that she would help provide all students with comprehensive health education. She said she would also require schools to include health education in report cards to better inform parents.

While a health education program exists in city schools, the Department of Education doesn’t report which students take part in the program. Quinn said she would ensure every school has a health education-certified teacher.

The endorsement is the latest in a string of support from women’s groups and activists.

The city chapter of the National Organization for Women endorsed Quinn in June. Feminist activists Gloria Steinem and Sandra Fluke have campaigned for Quinn as well.

For generations, the New York Yankees have had a lock on City Hall, fawned over by mayors in navy jackets and trotted out as heroes at ticker-tape parades.

But in the city that gave rise to Joe DiMaggio and Yogi Berra, a once-unthinkable prospect now looms. A die-hard fan of the Boston Red Sox, the kind of enthusiast reviled across the five boroughs, could soon rule the city.

Bill de Blasio, the city’s public advocate and a leading Democratic contender for mayor, has a confession: He is a Red Sox fan, tried and true. He was raised in Cambridge, Mass., becoming a devotee of the Red Sox at 6, and he is unabashed in his disdain for anything having to do with that team from the Bronx.

That's okay with me~ Boston here!

Bill de Blasio
