New York Escapes Direct Hit From Tropical Storm Henri - NBC News

Tropical Storm Henri pounded the shores of New York’s Long Island, but the area avoided the center of the storm. The wind has caused more problems than the rain, but the city was hit with flash flooding Saturday night. Aired on 08/22/021.

But it has been a rough summer, more storms than sunny days with lightning, thunder, flood warnings, high winds and some power outages.

6. It's been a rough summer - and the tourists are back this year

Last year everything was closed because of Covid and there was a quarantine to enter New York State. This year everything is open and the year-plus mask mandate to enter any store or business was rescinded at the beginning of July - just in time for the influx of tourists (Lake George, just north of here) and the Delta variant. When I've driven up north, I've seen license plates from states as far away as Florida, Georgia, Alabama and Utah - and that's just stopping at lights. I'm just wondering what the repercussions will be after Labor Day when school starts and people start spending time indoors again.

I'll be here until the morning. LOL.

Yeah, I also knew that it was going to go poorly when they decided to make everything the Wild Wild West a couple of months ago.

8. That's the thing! Everything "opened up!"

And when I've driven up north through Lake George Village, it's like every "normal" summer, the sidewalks are packed - with very few masks in sight.

9. Big Business Was Not Going To Endure Another Lost Summer

I think the word came down from above (Meaning The Big Corporations), that everything had to be back to normal by July 4th.

Be it Baseball games, Concerts, Shows, Amusement Parks, Movie Theaters, Restaurants, Travel, etc., it had to be back to 100% capacity for everything. And oh yeah.....NO MASKS.

It would have worked great, except once again, Covid apparently wasn't consulted, and kept doing what it's been doing since early 2020.

That Covid is a tricky thing to figure out. Just when you think it might start behaving completely different, it goes ahead and acts exactly the same way it has the last 20 months. Strange, that Covid.

10. That's it exactly. Everything remained closed last year and yearly gatherings were canceled.

This year, not only is everything open with vengeance - amusement parks, ice cream and souvenir venues, restaurants (and bars!). And the mask mandate, which was strictly enforced, was rescinded except for the unvaccinated - but the signs now say it's "the honor system," so you can imagine how that's going. The amusement park has new highly advertised rides and the nearby iconic ice cream venue (which tried opening last year, but closed down early because of a Covid breakout among employees) is not just open with extended hours, but when I've driven by, the crowds are packed in front of the numerous windows all the way out to the street - with no masks since they're getting ice cream!

Maybe an inch or two of rain and wind up to 20-30 mph. Maybe worse in some parts, but couldn't be that bad anywhere. Flooding and lights out are duly reported pretty much as they happen, and haven't heard a word.

I'm in the Northeast and it rained for a few minutes much earlier tonight and that was it. And no warnings here, either - while lightning and flood warnings have been a regular occurrence in these parts this summer. *knock on wood*
