FORDHAM HEIGHTS, the Bronx — A good Samaritan died while trying to save a man who fell onto the subway tracks in the Bronx during what police described as a gang assault on New Year’s Day, according to the NYPD. ... Police on Saturday released photos of nearly a dozen people wanted in connection with the deadly attack.

Investigators said the group approached a 38-year-old man on the southbound platform for the B and D trains at the Fordham Road station around 2:40 a.m. on Jan 1. One of the suspects displayed a knife and the group then assaulted the man, police said.

The victim fell onto the tracks during the attack, just as a train was coming into the station, according to investigators. Another man, 36, went down onto the tracks to help the victim and was fatally struck by the train, police said. The assault victim was able to avoid being hit and was taken to a hospital with a fractured arm, police said.

The suspects fled the subway station and no arrests had been made, as of Saturday morning.

In any event, this kind of event can not be pish-poshed away. And a breakdown of law and order (and basic safety for the public) on our transit systems is something that needs address.

4. An Argument Can Be Made, Sir

That relentless harassment of an underclass contributes to a climate of lawlessness and anger among its denizens that leads to a great deal of disruptive and criminal activity. People tagged with even a misdemeanor or two on top of other disadvantages tend to find failure in life more often than most. Any brush with the system is liable to lead to a life-time association.

I am not denying there is a problem to be solved, but the use of this as a reason for continuing something which clearly has not worked to address it gets right up my left nostril.

(and sentiment) - and still think that giving people a 'pass' on breaking the law (even relatively minor ones) is a relatively poor prescription for either enhanced safety - or respect for rules and civil order.

Your "relentless harassment" phrase would indicate that you see law enforcement (and perhaps the rules themselves?) in a fairly different frame of light - and we are probably unlikely to agree on that remaining 10%. And so be it.

I've no objection to rules, or their enforcement. I simply want to see equity in their application, and submit that would do far more to secure nigh universal adherence to them.
