Lawyers who fought city in FDNY discrimination case to get $3.7M in fees

To the victors go the spoils.

A Brooklyn judge has awarded $3.7 million in fees to the lawyers representing the Vulcan Society of black firefighters, which sued the city for discriminating against minority FDNY applicants.

Federal Judge Nicholas Garaufis said the lawyers were entitled to $300- to $500-per-hour for the thousands of hours of work they performed because they were largely victorious in the contentious suit originally brought by the Bush administration’s Justice Department.

Still, the interim award is far less than the $7.7 million in fees the Vulcan’s lawyers had sought. The city Law Department had no immediate comment on the ruling.
