Democratic wave surprises Monroe County as key town supervisor seats flip from red to blue

Rochester, N.Y. (WHAM) — A historic election night in Monroe County saw a significant political shift as Democrats swept several town and local races, marking a turning point both locally and nationally.

There were some tightly contested races in this election, including the supervisor race in Pittsford, where Republican Bill Smith claimed victory. But several other town supervisor seats flipped from red to blue in a pivotal election.

Monroe County Democratic Committee Chairman Stephen DeVay expressed surprise at the outcome.

"I don't think that anybody was going to bet on it last night that it would have been this many seats kind of flipped, and this many people really stepping up and saying, ‘Yeah, we're going to do this now,'" DeVay said.

Seeing that kind of historic line in several races. The reasons will be debated for awhile. Republicans turned off and stayed home, 10% of them flipped blue, organizing trumped money.

Hoping the same thing will happen to McHenry County in Illinois, where I have lived since 1994. The only one of the Chicago collar counties to vote consistently red.

We moved to Greece when I was 8. My dad grew up in Chicago. The first time we went to Buckman's, he wanted to get some jelly filled donuts and told the bakery guy he wanted bismarcks, which is what they are called in Chicago. They had no idea WTH he was talking about.

And all the quality department stores that are long gone - E.W. Edwards, Sibley's, McCurdy's, Forman's.
