Diana Nyad in midst of 48-hour swim in Herald Square

Eyewitness News
NEW YORK (WABC) -- An unusual site in the heart of New York City, a 42 thousand gallon swimming pool custom built in Herald Square.

It's part of a quest to swim for 48 hours straight. The task is not an easy one, not even for an extreme athlete like Diana Nyad, the woman known for her infamous swim from Cuba to Florida. Meteorologist Amy Freeze was among dozens of New Yorkers invited to join her as she takes on a new challenged. The mission to is to swim for two days straight while raising money to help Superstorm Sandy victims who still have not recovered.

Diana Nyad was born in New York City and wants Sandy victims to know she hasn't forgotten.

"I could say I'm from New York and I feel for anything these people go thru whether it be terrorists or natural disaster," she said.
