Statue of Liberty to reopen to public Sunday after deal reached

AP By MICHAEL VIRTANEN

NEW YORK -- The Statue of Liberty will reopen to the public Sunday after the state of New York agreed to shoulder the costs of running the site during the federal government shutdown.

Ferry trips to Liberty Island National Park from Manhattan's Battery Park will resume at 9 a.m. Tickets go on sale at 8:30 a.m.

A National Parks service spokesman says tickets for Liberty Island access for the days it's been closed will be honored, but only limited spots are available inside the monument or at the crown.

A spokesman for ferry operator Statue Cruises said Saturday that it's still unclear when service might resume from the New Jersey side of the Hudson River.

State and federal officials reached an agreement Friday to reopen the statue despite an ongoing standoff between President Obama's administration and the Republican majority in the House that has put a halt to the federal funding for national parks. In the deal between Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the National Park Service, the state will pay about $61,600 daily to open Liberty Island National Park to visitors beginning this weekend.

When the federal government shuts down people still want the services which only the federal government can provide.

It's astounding that the people screeching the most about the federal services being closed are the very people who cheer that same shutdown. Hypocrisy anybody?

Apparently ignorance truly is bliss. So are, apparently, frontal lobotomies.

This here is the harm!
