Federal, state lawmakers call for Immigration reform before the end of the year

NEWBURGH – There are 13 days left in the House of Representatives session before the end of the year and immigration reform legislation needs to happen now, area state and federal lawmakers said.

Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney (D, NY18) called on Congress to pass legislation before the end of the year. Maloney and State Assemblyman Frank Skartados (D, Milton) spoke Saturday at the Newburgh Armory Unity Center about the importance of immigration reform legislation and getting it passed as soon as possible.

“Our message to [House Speaker] Boehner and to the guys in the Tea Party who want to slow this down is that we can’t wait any longer,” Maloney said.

Mark Adams, president of the Dutchess/Putnam/Westchester Farm Bureau, stressed that farming is a critical part of the local economy; there are 36,000 farms statewide.
