Free agent outfielder Curtis Granderson agreed to terms on a four-year, $60-million deal with the Mets Friday morning, according to a team source. The deal, which is pending a physical, will become the biggest free agent signing the Mets have had in three-season tenure of Sandy Alderson as the general manager.
Talks between the three-time All-Star and the Mets began to get serious this week after Granderson and Alderson met for dinner and a introductory conversation Sunday night. The final negotiations on Thursday hinged on a guaranteed fourth year, which the 32-year old Granderson pushed for and the Mets were reluctant to concede to, according to sources familiar with the negotiations.
After three years of basically living on an austerity budget, five losing seasons and six since they have made the postseason, the Mets had targeted this offseason as the beginning of the rebuilding. It is the biggest free agent deal for the Mets since they signed Jason Bay in December 2009.
For the Mets, Granderson was one of the lefty power-hitters the Mets had targeted as a possibility to improve their outfield heading into this offseason.
