Incoming Police Chief Bill Bratton On NYPD: "It Will Practice What Mandela Preached"

BY ANNIE KARNI

Incoming police commissioner Bill Bratton on Saturday vowed that the city’s police department, under his watch, would be inspired by the teachings of Nelson Mandela.

“My commitment to you is that your police force in your city will be respectful,” said Bratton, who visited Rev. Al Sharpton’s National Action Network headquarters in Harlem with mayor-elect Bill de Blasio. “It will practice what Mandela preached. It will demand respect for all, compassion for all.”

Standing in front of a mostly black audience concerned with the unconstitutional use of stop and frisk, Bratton promised reform.

“I like being a cop because I know what cops can do when we get it right,” Bratton said, prompting cheers. “My promise to you is we will get it right.
