New policy allows out-of-state attorneys to do pro bono work

By RICHARD MOODY

A new rule in the state court system allows corporate attorneys registered in other states to provide pro bono assistance to needy New Yorkers.

The change is significant because of the number of lawyers registered in neighboring state's bar associations but working as in-house counsel in New York, the commercial center of the world.

Prior to the change, in-house lawyers could perform pro bono work only if they were registered with the New York State Bar.

This new rule is meant to close the gap between those who can and cannot afford lawyers.
