Family: 4-Year-Old Brooklyn Boy Left School Undetected, Walked Home Alone

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Community leaders and family members are calling for an investigation after a 4-year-old boy allegedly walked out of a Brooklyn school undetected.

The alleged incident happened in the middle of the school day Thursday.

The boy was in the restroom at P.S. 59 in Bedford Stuyvesant and became spooked when someone mistakenly turned out the light, community advocate Tony Herbert said. The child apparently left the school and walked a few blocks to his father’s house.

“It’s ridiculous that this child was able to walk from the school to his house and not be detected by anybody that’s an official at that school,” Herbert told 1010 WINS. “This child walked those blocks in New York City by himself.”

Her school was in another town six or seven miles away. They locked down the school and searched it before calling us and the police, and ultimately ended up letting the high-school out so that more people could search. A Forest Service ranger found her several hours later walking down the road-- the right road-- toward home, carrying a dead bird she'd picked up and a handful of flowers she'd picked. She was still mad about whatever interaction she'd had with her teacher.

Of course it was the late 70s early 80s in DC. My mom would walk me back to school. If my kids wandered away from their LA school today I would probably lose it.
