Ithaca wastewater plant to test renewable energy system

Written by
Andrew Casler

ITHACA — A new system that generates energy from human sewage is slated for testing at the Ithaca Area Wastewater Treatment Facility.

The Ithaca wastewater plant is scheduled to start testing the system in late March or early April. ClearCove Systems Inc., of Rochester, invented the new sewage treatment process.

“Really, we’re just giving them floor space to prove (a system) that we think has value for the way our facility wants to move into the future,” Ithaca wastewater treatment facility Chief Operator Dan Ramer said.

The project’s $300,000 cost is split evenly between ClearCove and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, ClearCove spokesman Alex Wright said.
