Senate GOP Leader Dean Skelos Links Charter Schools To Pre-K And School Aid Discussions

BY GLENN BLAIN

Senate GOP leader Dean Skelos believes support for charter schools needs to be part of the same legislative conversation as prekindergarten and overall school aid.

“I know the governor has indicated his support of charter schools, the high performing charter schools, and this will part of the whole discussion,” Skelos said in a brief gaggle with reporters at the Capitol. “There’s charter schools, there’s pre-k out there, there’s school aid, there are a lot of issues we can discuss.”

Skelos’ comments come a day before Mayor de Blasio is set to visit Albany to visit to push his plans for pre-K, including a tax on wealthy city residents. Charter school advocates are also planning a massive rally in Albany Tuesday.

Skelos would not elaborate on what charter school measures he’d like to see implemented, saying only “that’s what we’ll discuss.” He did reiterate, however, his opposition to Mayor de Blasio’s pre-K tax plans.
