Church services to remember East Harlem victims

Eyewitness News
EAST HARLEM (WABC) -- The church that was destroyed in the collapse of two apartment buildings in East Harlem is holding services Sunday at a nearby church.

The Spanish Christian Church held a joint service with Iglesia De Dios at 117th St. and 3rd Avenue, and will continue services together while the Spanish Christian Church is without a home.

Two of the victims of the blast, Griselde Camacho and Carmen Tanco, were members of Bethel Gospel Assembly.

"We feel the void. Both women were very active members," said Michelle Robinson, the church's business administrator, adding that Tanco often served as an usher at services and would greet her fellow congregants at the door.

ROSS BARKAN

Mayor Bill de Blasio addressed two churches just blocks from last week’s East Harlem gas explosion, attempting to offer comfort to a community still reeling from the sudden deaths of eight locals.

Mr. de Blasio appeared at a large, predominately African-American church and a low-slung Spanish-speaking church today, where he layered his speeches with Christian rhetoric and promises of help for the victims of the catastrophe.
