A report released today by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, a D.C.-based nonprofit government watchdog group, names North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory as one of the "Worst Governors in America." He is joined by 17 other governors on the list including Texas Gov. Rick Perry.
"Gov. McCrory likes to keep his friends close and his campaign donors closer, doling out plum appointments to his wealthy backers," reads McCrory's listing on the nonprofit's website.
Gov. McCrory named Art Pope as co-chairman of his transition team and then as state budget director, the most powerful appointed position in state government. Mr. Pope, his family, and his company contributed thousands of dollars to Gov. McCrorys campaign, the state Republican Party, and outside groups backing Gov. McCrory.
Despite promising during his first campaign not to appoint funders to the Department of Transportation board, 10 of Gov. McCrorys appointees were donors to or fundraisers for his campaign. Gov. McCrory also appointed as secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services a retired doctor whose family and her family's company and employees have contributed more than $260,000 to his campaign fund.
Elected in 2012; eligible for reelection in 2016
Elevated major campaign donor to serve as budget director and co-chairman of transition team
Appointed 10 campaign funders to Department of Transportation board, despite prior statements that fundraisers should not be appointed to that board
