Here are a few photos from Coastal Moral Monday held this evening in Manteo. It was a great event - I'd say a couple of hundred people were there which is pretty good considering it's summer (lot's of folks here work crazy hours in the summer), we are a long way from other parts of the state, and because we're a fairly conservative area. Rev. Barber spoke and was awesome! I didn't take many photos of him speaking because I really wanted to listen to what he had to say. No television coverage to speak of (like I said, we are a long way from anywhere) but there was a crew from CNN Japan there!

Was it raining there? Didn't look as if it had. It rained in Durham all damn day.

(5,815 posts)were there. We don't really have a "local" television outlet. The closest is Norfolk, VA which is 2.5 hours away, followed by Greenville, NC which is about 3 hours away, and Raleigh which is about 4 hours away. On the other hand, CNN Japan is indeed a bit further ...

(2,825 posts)Can you tell me what the approximate population is? I guess it changes according to the seasons?
Really enjoy these photos. Looks like a lot of retirees.
I have a feeling that if Andy Griffith were still alive, he might possibly have made an appearance there on stage. He was never shy about appearing with Democratic politicians. Still remember waiting for his inevitable endorsement that we all knew would tilt the election for us .
Also, Andy would have HATED the thought of exploring for gas and oil in those beautiful waters off the coast.

(5,815 posts)of Manteo is about 1,500. The permanent population of Dare County is about 60,000 (give or take). There were a lot of older folks there, but there were also a lot of middle age and younger folks too. Lots of teachers, families with little kids, etc. The photos might not to a good job of showing that, but they were there.
I think you're right about Andy. Several years ago, he fought hard to help keep a major food chain from building a store here on the island. (Although there are several of these stores on the northern beaches - KDH, Nags Head, etc.) I can't remember if he helped in the fight 20+ years ago to stop Mobil Oil from drilling off the coast, but he was definitely a die hard Democrat and not afraid to speak his mind!
