HATTERAS ISLAND, N.C.

Sand placement to help protect a stretch of N.C. 12 north of Rodanthe was completed this week.

Crews dredged and then placed about 1.7 million cubic yards of sand in the area known as the "S-Curves," according to a news release from the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

Work to remove equipment and piping from the site continues.

Required tilling of the new beach has been completed and final inspection is being scheduled. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will also perform a final survey of the offshore borrow source, where sand was dredged from for this project.

It's not like the sand won't get washed away again.

replacing washed-away beach sand time after time seems to be in the top five.
