Pennsylvania Turnpike to raise tolls 6 percent again in January

Beginning Jan. 6, the most common toll for a passenger vehicle will increase from $1.30 to $1.38 for E-ZPass customers; from $2.10 to $2.25 for cash customers; and from $6.75 to $7.20 for Toll By Plate. For Class-5 tractor-trailer trucks, the fee for the most common tolls will increase from $3.45 to $3.66 for E-ZPass and from $15.35 to $16.30 for cash.

For passenger vehicles that travel the length of the turnpike, the toll will increase from $55 to $58.30 and for E-ZPass users from $39.25 to $41.60.

The state Turnpike Commission said the money is needed for infrastructure.
“Parts of our tollway will soon turn 78 years old, and we owe it to toll-paying customers to continue to invest in our road to make it safer, smoother and wider,” turnpike CEO Mark Compton said in a news release. “This year, about 84 percent of our $552 million capital budget is focused on renewing, rebuilding and widening our highway system, which last year carried more than 200 million vehicles.”

Pennsylvania Auditor General Eugene DePasquale‘s fear is that motorists will find alternate routes to avoid turnpike tolls.
