On this day in 1911, Pittsburgh got its 'h' back
Happy “H Day!”
That’s what some are calling today’s anniversary of the day in 1911 that Pittsburg got its “h” back and officially became Pittsburgh again.
For two decades, the spelling was decreed to be Pittsburg, though many resisted, including a publisher of one of this newspaper’s precursors.
If you look around, you still can find plenty of examples of the no-h spelling, such as inside the rotunda at the Pennsylvanian, Downtown, which was built in 1900 as the city’s Pennsylvania Station and is now residences and an event space.
Pittsburg still gets spelled that way by bad spellers and in other states.
