Harrisburg teen playing with revolver accidentally killed friend

Harrisburg police have charged a 14-year-old in connection with the death of his friend in an accidental shooting, police announced Tuesday. The name of the juvenile and the specific charges were not released.

Police concluded the shooting Nov. 5 about 6 p.m. inside a home that killed Malachi John, 14, was a tragic accident. Malachi was known by his nickname Tarzan.

Investigators believe the suspect had cocked a revolver, and was trying to decock it when the hammer slipped from his hand, causing the gun to fire, said Dauphin County Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Zawisky. The single round hit Malachi in the face, causing mortal brain injuries. “It appears they were playing around, had a gun, and mishandled it and it accidentally discharged,” Zawisky said. “It appears both were very close friends. It’s absolutely tragic.”

After the shooting, the teen loaded his wounded friend into a vehicle and drove around looking for help. He spotted an ambulance about a mile away in the 100 block of South 13th Street and flagged them down for help.

Sad things happen.
However, there is no way those teens could have grown up in a culture that does not flood our lives with talk of guns, sales of guns, desires for guns, entertainment with guns, games with guns, killings with guns, accidents with guns, toddlers with guns, teens with BIG guns, dames with dozens, guys with gazillions...

No, there is no way on God's earth that the off-chart exceptionalism that is American sickness with guns could be any different than it is.
The rest of the world simply doesn't get it; we are 'right'.
God alone knows when enough blood will have flowed.

Any suggestion that I might make about a possible moral core in American culture causing change, is immediately negated by common-sense statements like, "It will never change."

(Somewhere in those words was a subtle feeling of sarcasm, mostly veiled by sadness.)

Whether the boy was killed by accident or on purpose, the gun should have never been in the hands of those kids.
