North Charleston special election set for January 13 after former Councilman Brown resigns
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) The resignation of former North Charleston City Councilman Mike A. Brown has triggered a special election to fill his seat in representing District 1, according to the Charleston County Board of Voter Registration and Elections.
Mike A. Brown, one of the three council members indicted in a federal corruption probe earlier in the year ultimately resigned Thursday. His decision makes him the third council member to resign amid the ongoing federal investigation. Though he continued to hold his seat during the ongoing investigation, he was already suspended by South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster.
A special election to fill the now vacant seat will take place January 13, 2026. The candidate filing period will open on November 7, 2025 and will close at 12 p.m. on Nov. 17.
To vote in this election, citizens must be registered to vote at least 30 days before Election Day.
