Election commission claims ballot machine contract was millions more than agreed

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - The State Election Commission said it has been learning about issue after issue following the firings of two high-level officials and resignation of another in the last month.

The commission said the latest problem it has uncovered could mean a financial hit for the state if it isn’t handled.

“We’ve had so many things crop up that we didn’t know about,” SEC Chair Dennis Shedd said during a meeting Monday in downtown Columbia.

Last year, the State Election Commission’s former executive director, Howard Knapp, signed a contract to purchase about 3,200 new ballot scanners ahead of the November election.
