Anderson tire recycler pays $83,000 in state fines

Anderson County's only tire recycling business recently paid $83,000 in fines for violating state rules, according to the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control.

Viva Recycling of South Carolina paid the fines under terms of a February consent order with the agency. The fines included $7,000 related to a 2016 consent order and $76,125 stemming from this year's order. The $76,125 fine is the largest penalty issued by DHEC in 2017, according to agency spokesman Robert Yanity.

Repeated efforts to reach the company's chief executive, Martin Sergi, were unsuccessful.

Homeland Park residents have complained about dust, fumes, health concerns, mosquitoes, noise and road damage since Viva Recycling opened its tire-processing operation on Abbeville Highway more than two years ago.
