Officials: Man shoots victim on San Antonio VIA bus, leads cops on bicycle chase
ADKINS A man shot someone in the face inside a VIA bus early Monday and fled on a bicycle, leading dozens of law enforcement officers on a chase in this rural town east of San Antonio before engaging S.W.A.T. officers in an hours-long standoff.
Officials said Charles Adamson Jr., 43, shot at the victim about 8:28 a.m., shortly after boarding a bus outside Lone Oak Grocery near Lone Oak and Loop 107 in Bexar County. One passenger and the driver already were aboard the inbound, Route 30 bus when Adamson and two others got inside.
An argument ensued between the victim and the suspect, and ended when the gunman shot the victim in the jaw with a handgun. Bexar County sheriff's spokesman Paul Berry said it was not known Monday why the men argued. Berry said after the shooting, the suspect got off the bus to remove a bicycle he had loaded onto the front of the vehicle before attempting to get back inside. The bus driver refused to let him board again, and the suspect left on the bicycle and headed toward Loop 1604 and FM 3432.
Though officials did not know his condition, witnesses said the victim appeared to be standing shortly after the shooting. He was flown to San Antonio Military Medical Center.
