Michael Quinn Sullivan promises “fireworks” in ethics case

Empower Texans’ Michael Quinn Sullivan is using last week’s Texas Ethics Commission hearing for fundraising fodder – casting himself as the victim of an IRS-style vendetta against conservative organizations.

Last week’s hearing centered on complaints filed against Sullivan and Empower Texans by Rep. Jim Keffer, R-Eastland, and former Rep. Vicki Truitt, R-Keller, for failing to register as a lobbyist, even though Sullivan was paid to communicate with legislators to influence legislation.

In a letter to supporters, Sullivan objected to the closed-door format, calling the hearing a “kangaroo court” and suggesting that the complaints were a vendetta by allies of House Speaker Joe Straus.

“They are doing what President Obama, the IRS and the FEC have been trying to do: silence anyone who disagrees with them,” Sullivan wrote. He also slammed Houston businessman Paul Hobby, a member of the commission, for supporting a bill that would have required groups like his to disclose their donors. Empower Texans advocates for conservative legislation, but does not publicly disclose its donors.

“Tea Party groups, Republican organizations, garden clubs, whoever, whatever…they will come after you next,” he wrote.
