Abbott raises privacy concern with Affordable Care Act grants
Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott and 12 other attorneys general sent a letter today to Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius saying that the personal information of those who sign up for insurance under the federal health care reform this fall wont be properly protected.
The letter comes a day before the federal government is expected to reach another milestone in its rollout of the Affordable Care Acts health insurance exchanges. On Thursday, the government may announce which individuals and groups will receive grants to fund navigator programs, which will help people sign up for insurance.
Texas, which has one of the largest populations of uninsured of all the states, is set to receive the biggest pot of money: $8.1 million.
Because these navigators will be granted substantial access to Americans personal information including their Social Security numbers and tax information I am deeply concerned about privacy and the security of this very sensitive information, Abbott said in a separate statement.
