National Salmonella outbreak highlights precautions around live poultry--at least 32 Texans sick

EAST TEXAS (KYTX) - In light of an ongoing Salmonella outbreak that has sickened at least 316 people in 37 states the Texas Department of State Health Services reminds people about the importance of basic hygiene practices around live poultry. At least 32 people in Texas have gotten sick after handling live poultry as part of the largest ever Salmonella outbreak linked to live birds in the United States.

"With the popularity of backyard chickens, more people are at risk of being exposed to Salmonella. All poultry can carry the bacteria.," said Dr. Linda Gaul, Texas State Epidemiologist. "Fortunately, the risk of infection can be greatly reduced by taking some common sense steps like washing your hands with soap and water immediately after handling birds and not bringing live poultry into your home."

It ain't the backyard poultry flocks that are the problem, dude. It's the filthy, overcrowded kestrel91316 Aug 2013 #4

Hey, Towelie, I've been meaning to make amends for a dumb comment I made about your name. I took the 'towelie' to mean the character in the Christmas Poo episode of Southpark and made some insinuating comment about weed. I regretted it ever since. I can't even remember the context now. But you weren't even in the thread. So you couldn't defend either way. I suppose I should have private mailed you. Just wanted to clear my conscious.

I've always liked what you have to say. You are cool with me. I may have left the wrong impression with others that I had a problem with you or your handle. Hope you forgive that old meta comment.

I loved that episode, as a matter of fact. Ah, hold on while I stuff a pillow in my pants.

Fortunately, I have a fairly thick skin and try not to hold grudges since the negative vibes are counter-productive. All is forgiven and thank you for the apology. It shows a lot of character to come forward and makes amends for past transgressions.
