Georgetown votes to rejoin Lone Star Rail District

The Georgetown City Council voted Tuesday night to rejoin the Lone Star Rail District, which means the city will once again be a stop on the 118-mile proposed commuter railroad.

The vote was initially a 3-3 tie with council members evenly divided over rejoining the district. Mayor George Garver broke the tie by siding with the supporters of the railroad, which is planned to run from San Antonio to Georgetown.

The council had voted back in June to withdraw from the district, saying it would be too expensive to operate a station. At Tuesday night’s meeting the council heard that the Georgetown Transportation Advisory Board recommended the city rejoin the district in order to reap the benefits of being included in an environmental study.

Being included in an environmental study gives the city more options, the board said. If the proposed corridor that includes the Georgetown segment of the railroad is cleared by an environmental study, the city could possibly qualify for federal funds for other transportation projects even if it drops out of the railroad, the board said.
