(112,204 posts)In August 2012, Friedman told me that incumbent Rick Perry was vulnerable and that he was considering challenging him. He said Perry has embarrassed the state and has rewarded wealthy interests at the expense of cash-strapped Texans worried about their health care and their childrens schools. Perry is not running for reelection. Last year, Friedmans remarks mirrored Davis campaign strategy this year, in which she says Texas should be using its economic success to spend more on public schools. Said Friedman: Perry has created a state thats first in business climate and 49th in education. Whats wrong with that picture?
Any Democrat on the ballot faces an uphill climb. The party havent elected a statewide political candidate since 1994. In his initial run for governor, the author of They Aint Making Jews Like Jesus Anymore was highlighted by one-liners. But Friedman said he would be a more serious and substantive candidate. These days, the cosmic cowboy is reading Churchill.

(14,726 posts)" Independent". If he is a Democrat why didn't his votes go to Chris Bell. We would then have gotten rid of Perry or at least had a much better chance of winning.
He was one of two independent candidates in the 2006 election for the office of Governor of Texas. Receiving 12.6% of the vote, Friedman placed fourth in the six-person race.
Republican Perry 1,716,803 39.03
Democratic Chris Bell 1,310,353 29.79
Independent Carole Keeton Strayhorn 797,577
Independent Richard Kinky Friedman 546,869
I can't stand this freak.
