LBJ library among 6 UT sites painted with A&M graffiti

Six sites on the University of Texas at Austin campus, including the LBJ Library, were defaced over the weekend with graffiti in maroon and white, school police said.

Slogans painted on the five buildings and one sculpture were "anti-UT and pro-Texas A&M," said Cindy Posey, spokeswoman for the University of Texas Police Department in Austin.

In addition to the LBJ Presidential Library at 2313 Red River St., other tagged buildings included the Thompson Conference Center at 2405 Robert Dedman Dr., the Doty Fine Arts Building at 23rd and Trinity streets, and two spots at the Texas Performing Arts at the University of Texas at Austin (previously Performing Arts Center) at 23rd and Trinity streets.

In addition, a public sculpture across the street from Texas Memorial Museum at 2400 Trinity St., was also marked with graffiti, probably by spray paint, Posey said.

After a University of Texas student reported seeing Texas A&M markings spray-painted on a tiger statue near the Texas Memorial Museum on Sunday, police found additional markings made in maroon and white paint around campus, according to a report the UT Police Department issued Wednesday.

“Coincidentally, the Texas A&M football team had a devastating loss to the Auburn Tigers earlier ths same day,” the report said. “Unlike the Texas A&M loss, these blemishes found on campus can and will be removed as soon as possible.”

The department estimated it will cost $525 to scrub the graffiti.
