St. Joseph Health System reports data breach (Brazos Valley region)

Bryan, Texas--St. Joseph Health System officials said Tuesday that more than 400,000 former and current patient and employee files were subject to a data security attack in mid-December.

According to a press release from St. Joseph spokesman Tim Ottinger, the cyber attackers, some of whom were working from IP addresses traced to China, gained accessed to a server containing patient and employee information for St. Joseph Regional Health Center, Burleson St. Joseph Center, Madison St. Joseph Health Center, Grimes St. Joseph Health Center and St. Joseph Rehabilitation Center.

Data accessible on the server, which was immediately taken offline once the breach was discovered, included names, Social Security numbers and possibly addresses. Some patients’ medical information was accessible, as well as some employees’ bank accounts.

“While it is possible that some information was taken, the forensics investigation has been unable to confirm this,” the press release states. “{St. Joseph Health System} does not believe any of our former/current patients’, employees’ or their beneficiaries’ information is at further risk because of this incident.”
